“The beauty is in being yourself which is what beauty should be really” Bernadine Evaristo
This quote caught my attention.
I was binge watching the BBC IMAGINE series presented by Alan Yentob. The second episode to appear on my screen was the inspired life and works of Bernadine Evaristo. Towards the end of the episode, Bernadine and Yentob are standing in a room at the Tate Modern gallery in London, surrounded by 500 photo portraits of black people with varying sexualities; lesbian, transgender, gender non conforming. Although there were the layers of race and sexuality involved in these portraits, Bernadine was struck by their humanity.
“The beauty is in being themselves,
which is what beauty should be really”
is what Bernadine observed.
From my work in the “Age Well Naturally” arena, I wondered how this quote would translate. If menopausal women strip back their beauty values to humanity and grow from there, what would they become? How would they flourish into their ‘Second Spring?’.
The ‘option’ to find and accept your true self. Is that where beauty comes from? Your inner peace, inner knowing, a certain confidence? If women could allow themselves the time to PAUSE or STOP.
This of course is easier said than done when you have a career, family or a life with demands and commitments.
If there is a way to pause, women may begin to realise and allow themselves to understand the transition they are going through, change the narrative around ageing and looking older. Make it an invitation to be what can be the best years of their lives and realise that menopause is a very human experience.
Eventually and after some physical and emotional turbulence and grief of the loss of one’s youth, there might be a connection with what is truly important. What will it take for this new way of life to have women feeling and looking well? The pressure to stay looking younger may dissipate and replaced with appreciation and value of looking like an older woman.
