Healthy Hot Drinks This Winter

Cosying up with a hot cuppa and a book is one of the pleasures to enjoy as the winter months arrive.

Sometimes it can be easy to go for a coffee or tea, but too much caffeine can dehydrate you or leave you feeling frazzled and disrupt your sleep.

So I’ve compiled a list of heathy cosy alternative warm drinks to make ready for your winter wellbeing.

The Herbal Option

This is easy! Add any spice, herb or natural sweetener to your hot water to soothe and cleanse and hydrate you from the inside out. You can make your own or there are some amazing brands like Pukka and Teapig who offer a selection of teas with wonderful aromas. Here are some inspiration to add to your favourite mug.

Lemon, ginger and honey.
Cloves, cinnamon, orange.
Spiced pear tea bags

Cacao

Cacao is a healthy, nutritious alternative for chocolate. It is full of minerals which include magnesium, copper, potassium, iron, zinc, and brain-boosting flavonoids. These can help protect your body from free radicals and the harmful effects of oxidative stress. Cacao contains no sugar. It can boost your mood and energise you in a healthy way. It may also help to reduce inflammation.

Cacao is also known for ‘opening the heart’. It’s qualities stimulate the heart to offer feelings of euphoria. It increases oxygen to the heart to make us more open and aware.

It can be taken as a morning drink or as ritual as part of a ceremony.

You can make this inviting drink with dairy milk, or any milk alternative, such as oat or almond milk.

Add a couple of teaspoons of cacao powder to a pan. Add a few drops of boiled water from the kettle and stir together to make a paste. Then add the milk of your choice and heat up.

You may want to add, some maple syrup, rock salt and some spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, or even a pinch of cayenne pepper to jazz up your cacao treat.
